A Custom Pet Portrait for Christmas: How to Give a Gift They'll Keep Forever (and When to Order)
Share
Most Christmas presents have a season. A jumper gets worn until spring, a candle burns down, a gadget is replaced by next year's version. But some gifts move into the house and stay. A portrait of the dog who greets them at the door every evening, or the cat who has claimed the same armchair for nine years, is one of those.
This guide is for anyone thinking about giving a hand-painted pet portrait this Christmas. It covers why it makes such a lasting gift, how to choose a photo without spoiling the surprise, what happens after you order, and when we recommend ordering.
The short version: Our portraits start from $299, ship free to every US address, and take about 4–6 weeks after you approve your sketch (the sketch arrives within 2–3 days of ordering). You then approve a photo of the finished painting before it ships. For Christmas, we recommend ordering by November 10. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee: revision rounds and holiday shipping can add time, so earlier is safer.
Why a painted portrait becomes a keepsake
A pet portrait isn't merchandise with a face printed on it. It's an oil painting of one particular animal, painted by hand, stroke by stroke, on stretched canvas: their markings, the way they tilt their head, the look in their eyes.
That's why people keep these paintings for good. It hangs where the family passes it every day, and over the years it becomes part of the house. For a pet who is still curled up on the sofa, it celebrates who they are right now. For one who has passed, it can be a gentle, beautiful way to keep them in the room.
If you'd like a timeless look that suits almost any home, a Classic Realism oil portrait is our most beloved style. It paints them exactly as they are, without costumes or props.
If the person you're buying for loves the everyday moments (the dog asleep on the sofa, the cat in their favourite chair), a Cozy at Home portrait paints them in that kind of warm, lived-in setting.
The images in this post are digital mockups that illustrate each style; the portraits themselves are painted by hand in oil.

Choosing the photo (without giving the game away)
The painting starts with your photo, so this is the step most worth getting right. You don't need a professional shot, just a clear one.
- Look for the eyes. A photo where the eyes are sharp and catching a little light makes all the difference. Blurry eyes are the one thing that's hard to paint around.
- Daylight beats flash. Natural light from a window shows true colour and fur texture. Flash tends to flatten both.
- Get down to their level. Shots taken at the pet's eye level usually make warmer portraits than ones taken from above.
- Choose a pose that looks like them. The regal sit, the sleepy sprawl, the head on the paws. Pick the one the family would recognise straight away.
To keep it a surprise, look through their social media or the family photo albums, or quietly ask a sibling, partner or close friend to send you a few favourites. If you're not sure which photo to use, upload the clearest one. The sketch stage is there to get the pose and composition right before anything is painted. For more detail, our guide on how to pick the right photo walks through it step by step.
What to expect after you order
Here's what happens while you keep the secret:
- You order and upload your photo. Choose your size at checkout. Sizes run from 11×14 (from $299) up to 24×36.
- You approve a hand-drawn sketch. Within 2–3 days, the artist sends you a sketch so the pose and composition are right before any paint goes on. You can ask for changes as many times as you like at this stage.
- The oil painting is made by hand. Once you approve the sketch, the artist begins painting. Then the piece is left to dry and finished.
- You approve a photo of the finished painting. Before anything ships, we send you a photo of the finished portrait. It ships after you approve that photo.
- It arrives at your door. Shipping is free to all US addresses, including Alaska, Hawaii and APO, and each canvas arrives in protective, gift-ready packaging.
Your sketch arrives within 2–3 days of ordering. After you approve it, please allow about 4–6 weeks for painting, drying, finishing and delivery. Extra revision rounds and holiday shipping can add time. If you'd like to understand each stage in more depth, see how the sketch-then-paint process works.

When to order for Christmas
We recommend ordering by November 10 for a portrait you'd like to give at Christmas.
To be clear, this is a recommendation, not a guaranteed cutoff. It's based on our usual timeline: a sketch within 2–3 days, then about 4–6 weeks after you approve it. Revision rounds and holiday shipping can add time, so earlier is safer.
If you're working towards a specific date, contact us before you order and we'll see what's possible.
Gifting and unwrapping tips
A portrait is a gift people tend to remember being given. A few small touches help make the moment:
- Ship it to yourself. If you live apart from the recipient, consider delivering it to your own address so the surprise stays safe and you can choose when they open it.
- Leave the protective packaging on until the day. Store the parcel flat or upright somewhere cool and dry, away from radiators and direct sun.
- Unwrap it last. Some people like to save the portrait for the final gift of the morning, when everyone is gathered.
- Add a note. A few lines about why you chose that photo (the trip, the first day home, the habit everyone laughs about) often means as much as the painting.

Quick questions

Portraits start from $299 for an 11×14 canvas. Larger sizes are priced on the product page.
Is shipping included?
Yes. Shipping is free to all US addresses, including Alaska, Hawaii and APO.
Will I see the portrait before it's sent?
Yes, twice. You approve a hand-drawn sketch before painting begins, and you approve a photo of the finished painting before it ships.
How long does it take?
Your sketch arrives within 2–3 days. After you approve it, allow about 4–6 weeks. Revision rounds and holiday shipping can add time. For Christmas, we recommend ordering by November 10. That's a recommendation, not a guarantee.
Can I include more than one pet?
Yes. Choose the number of pets on the product page and make sure every pet appears in the photos you upload. Additional pets are priced as an add-on.

Yes. Every portrait is real oil on canvas, painted by hand by our studio artists, stroke by stroke.
A gift that stays
Long after the tree comes down, the portrait will still be on the wall: their dog, their cat, painted with care. If you're thinking of giving one this year, start with a good photo, order by November 10 if you can, and we'll take it from there.
